Portsmouth's Hedly Street Transfer Station (Main):
305 Hedly Street, Portsmouth. Mon., Fri., Sat. 7:30-4; Tue. & Thurs. 7:30-7. Closed Wednesdays, Sundays and holidays.
Phone: 401-293-5865; Click here for the website. Residential stickers are required and are available at the Tax Collections office in Town Hall. 203 annual sticker: $250 for the first sticker; $10 for second in household. A one-week pass is $50. Town approved P.A.Y.T. bags are the only acceptable residential trash allowed into waste bin at the Transfer Station.

Prudence Island Transfer Station: Narragansett Ave. Winter hours (November 1 to Memorial Day): Tues. & Thurs 10-12, Sat. & Sun. 1-3; Summer hours (Memorial Day to October 31): Tues. & Thurs. 9-3, Sat. & Sun. 9-4. Click here for the website. 2023 annual sticker: $250 for the first sticker; $10 for second in household. Seasonal passes are available: $125 for a six month (1/1 - 7/30); $65 for a four month sticker (6/1 - 9/30); $50 for a one-week pass.

Appliances (large/white goods): Drop off at the MainPrudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase.

Appliances (w/ Freon): Drop off at Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase. Doors must be off of refrigerators and freezers. $15 fee at the Prudence Island Transfer Station.

Asphalt, Brick, Concrete: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, with an annual sticker or pass purchase and with an additional C&D/ABC pass. Annual Transfer Station sticker holders receive four C&D and/or ABC passes provided by the Tax Collector’s Office in Town Hall on an as-needed basis. A C&D and ABC pass is good for one load of C&D and/or ABC. Each load must be in containers and volume may not exceed 32 gallons. Each additional load up to and including 32 gallons of C&D or ABC may be disposed of in the respective bin for a $50 fee per load by purchasing additional pass(es) at the Tax Collector's Office. Residents must present a pass for either C&D and/or ABC. Residents may also dispose of clay pots and ceramic tiles with asphalt, brick, and concrete.

Books and Media: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase in the Salvation Army or Discover Books bins. All residents may use book bins around town. In addition to books, the Discover Book bins accept commercially recorded media such as CDs, DVDs, records and books on CD.

Bulky Rigid Plastic: Drop off at the annual events held at the Main Transfer Station until the bin is full, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. Call the Department of Public Works for details.

Bulky Waste: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase. Toilets, sinks, and tile (not ceramic) are considered bulky waste.

Carpeting/Rugs: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase. All carpeting/rugs must be placed in the Bulky Bin. Carpet pads must be disposed in town-approved PAYT bags.

Christmas Trees: Picked up curbside in January on the mainland OR drop off at Department of Public Works.

Clothing/Textiles: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with an annual sticker purchase in the Salvation Army, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of RI or Planet Aid donation bins. All residents may use clothing donation bins around town.

Construction & Demolition Debris: Drop off in the appropriate bin at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, with an annual sticker or pass purchase, and with an additional C&D pass.

For the Main Transfer Station: Annual Transfer Station sticker holders receive four C&D and/or ABC passes provided by the Tax Collector’s Office in Town Hall on an as-needed basis.

For the Prudence Island Transfer Station, Annual Transfer Station sticker holders receive four C&D passes provided by the Transfer Station Attendant on an as-needed basis. (ABC is not accepted at the Prudence Island Transfer Station.)

Residents must present a pass for C&D at the time of disposal to the Transfer station attendant. Each C&D pass is good for one load of C&D. Each load must be in containers and volume may not exceed 32 gallons. Additional loads after initial four, up to and including 32 gallons of C&D, may be disposed of in the respective bin for a $50 fee per load by purchasing additional pass(es) at the Tax Collector's Office or the Prudence Island Transfer Station.

E-waste: Free recycling at yearly town events, call the Department of Public Works for details. Includes TVs, monitors, computers, electronics such as DVD players, printers, and electric items (typically anything with a plug).

Extra Recycling: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase.

Food Waste: Voluntary curbside pick up program available through Black Earth Compost for $99.00 per year.

Furniture: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase.

Leaf & Yard Waste: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase, from March 15 through December 31. You may use either yard bags, barrels (55 gallon max.) or small boxes to dispose of yard waste – no loose material or material in plastic bags is accepted. Materials too large to fit in 55 gallon container must be cut to 3 feet or less in length, no more than 2 inches in diameter, and bundled with twine.

Mattresses & Box Springs: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station for free with an annual sticker or pass purchase. Call the Main Transfer Station prior to bringing mattresses to see if there is room in container, as recyclable mattresses and box springs incur a $70 fee if there's no room in container. Drop off at the Prudence Island Transfer Station for a fee of $70, with an annual sticker or pass purchase. Pay fee by cash to attendant. Prudence Island sticker or pass holders may drop off mattresses, free of charge, at the Main Transfer Station. At both Transfer Stations, damaged/wet/bed bug-infested mattresses or box springs will not be accepted for recycling and will incur a disposal charge of $70/unit. 

Motor Oil & Filters: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase. No other fluids accepted. Not accepted on Prudence Island.

Paper for Shredding: Free at yearly town events, call the Department of Public Works for updates.

Propane Tanks: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase. Propane tanks must be empty with valves removed.

Scrap Metal: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with an annual sticker or pass purchase.

Small Appliances (no Freon): Typically electric items with a cord, can be dropped off with e-waste (see above instructions).

Tires: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, for a fee of $6 each per car tire (less than 20 inches) and $21 per truck tire (20 inches to 24 inches), with an annual sticker or pass purchase. Tires only- no rims.
