Material Recycling Facility: 943 River St., Woonsocket (Highway Division property). Hours: Mon.-Fri. 7am - 3:15pm and Saturdays 8am - 11:45am (excluding holidays). Visit the Recycling Facility website here. The city also has a Swap Shed at the Material Recycling Facility where small dishes, small appliances, toys, tools, fixtures and nick-knacks can be dropped off for reuse. 

Department of Public Works (DPW): 169 Main Street, Woonsocket. Hours: Mon-Fri, 8:30am to 4pm.

Antifreeze: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility (must be Ethylene Glycol based).

Appliances (large/white goods): For residents that are part of the city’s curbside collection program, these items are picked up curbside, free of charge, up to 1 item per week. These items include refrigerators, dryers, or dishwashers, etc. Residents must obtain a free sticker from the DPW. Proper identification and proof of residency/ownership is required. After obtaining an orange sticker, the resident/property owner must contact Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule an appointment for the pickup of the item OR drop off at Material Recycling Facility, free of charge, for all residents, no sticker required.

Appliances (w/ Freon): For residents that are part of the city’s curbside collection program, these items are picked up curbside, free of charge, up to 1 item per week. These items include refrigerators, dryers, or dishwashers, etc. Residents must obtain a free sticker from the DPW. After obtaining an orange sticker, the resident/property owner must contact Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule an appointment for the pickup of the item. OR drop off at Material Recycling Facility, free of charge, for all residents, no sticker required.

Auto Batteries: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

Batteries: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility. Rechargeable batteries only (no alkaline/single-use batteries accepted).

Books and Media: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility into the Discover Books bin, including books and commercially recorded media such as CDs, DVDs, records and books on CD.

Bulky Rigid Plastic: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

Bulky Waste: For residents that are part of the city’s curbside collection program, these items are picked up curbside, free of charge, up to 1 item per month. These include non-recyclable items that do not fit into the burgundy carts, such as couches, chairs, tables, rugs, etc. Residents must obtain a free sticker from the DPW. After obtaining a green sticker, the resident must contact Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule an appointment for the pickup of the item.

Cardboard: All flattened cardboard must fit inside of the recycling cart, with the lid closed. Cardboard that does not fit can be dropped off at the Material Recycling Facility.

Carpeting/Rugs: For residents that are part of the city’s curbside collection program, these items are picked up curbside, free of charge, up to 1 item per month. These include non-recyclable items that do not fit into the burgundy carts, such as couches, chairs, tables, rugs, etc. Residents must obtain a free sticker from the DPW. After obtaining a green sticker, the resident must contact Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule an appointment for the pickup of the item. 

Christmas Trees: Picked up curbside during the first 2 weeks of January. 

Clothing/Textiles: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

Cooking Oil: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

E-waste: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility. Includes TVs, computer, printers, monitors, computer equipment, microwaves, vacuums, etc. Must show proof of Woonsocket residency (ID required).

Extra Recycling: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

Furniture: For residents that are part of the city’s curbside collection program, these items are picked up curbside, free of charge, up to 1 item per month. These include non-recyclable items that do not fit into the burgundy carts, such as couches, chairs, tables, rugs, etc. Residents must obtain a free sticker from the DPW. After obtaining a green sticker, the resident must contact Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule an appointment for the pickup of the item.

Ink Cartridges: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

Leaf & Yard Waste: For residents that are part of the city’s curbside collection program; Picked up curbside during two 10-week periods, one in the spring and one in the fall. See the Trash, Recycling & Yard Waste Collection Schedule on the website for exact collection weeks. Yard waste include leaves, grass clippings, small branches, weeds, etc. Place yard waste in compost bags or closed barrels (with lids) clearly marked ‘yard waste’ and leave them at the curb on your collection day by 7:00 am.

OR Drop off: For the remainder of the spring, summer and fall weeks when there is no curbside collection of leaves and yard waste, a drop-off site will be provided. The drop-off site is located on Mill Street (off of River Street) in Blackstone, MA and will be open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 am to 2:30 pm for those residents having the appropriate yard waste sticker; all residential properties in the City of Woonsocket are included in the yard waste drop-off program. Stickers can be obtained at the DPW, at a cost of $25.00. Proper identification and vehicle registration is required. Commercial vehicle registrations are excluded from this program. Mattresses & Box Springs: Drop off, FREE of charge, at Material Recycling Facility. Must show proof of Woonsocket residency (ID required). ALL mattresses and box springs MUST be inspected on site by the attendant on duty. If approved as recyclable, then you will be required to bag and sealed the mattresses on the site (you must supply your own bags and tape. OR picked up curbside (fees apply) by contacting Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule an appointment. Either option is available to ALL Woonsocket residents. If your mattresses and/or box springs are rejected, then you will have to dispose of the item(s) at your own cost at RIRRC or a private facility.

Motor Oil & Filters: Drop off at North Smithfield Highway Garage, 281 Quaker Highway, North Smithfield. Hours: Mon.-Fri. 7:00am-3:00 pm, Sat. 9am-3pm. OR see this list of other facilities.

Paper for Shredding: Free at yearly City events, call DPW for updates.

Plastic Bags & Film: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

Propane Tanks: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

Scrap Metal: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility.

Small Appliances (no Freon): Typically electric items with a cord, if made primarily out of metal, can be dropped off with scrap metal

Shredded Paper: Drop off at Material Recycling Facility. Shredded paper must be in clear bags, not collected with cardboard.
