Main Transfer Station:
305 Hedly Street, Portsmouth. Mon., Fri., Sat. 7:30-4; Tue. & Thurs. 7:30-7. Closed Wednesdays, Sundays and holidays.

Prudence Island Transfer Station: Narragansett Ave. Winter hours: Tues. & Thurs 10-12, Sat. & Sun. 12-2; Summer hours: Tues. & Thurs. 9-1, Sat. & Sun. 1-4, open Mon. 1-4 of 3-day weekends. Click here for website. Seasonal passes are available for $75 (valid 4-months from purchase date).

Appliances (large/white goods): Drop off at the MainPrudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase.

Appliances (w/ Freon): Drop off at Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. Doors must be off of refrigerators and freezers. $15 fee at the Prudence Island Transfer Station.

Asphalt, Brick, Concrete: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. If more than a car trunk load or 33 gallon container, cost is $75 per load, limit 1 load per day. In order to dispose of a pickup truck, van or SUV load, residents will be required to purchase a pass at the Tax Collector’s office in Town Hall. You must provide your pass to the security guard when you arrive at the Transfer Station to dispose of your Asphalt Bricks and Concrete. The Prudence Island Transfer Station does not accept Asphalt Bricks and Concrete.

Books: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. Drop into Salvation Army, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of RI or Planet Aid bins at the Transfer Station or around town.

Bulky Waste: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase.

Carpeting/Rugs: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. 

Christmas Trees: Picked up curbside in January OR drop off at Department of Public Works.

Clothing/Textiles: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with annual sticker purchase. Drop into Salvation Army, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of RI or Planet Aid bins at the Transfer Station or around town.

Construction & Demolition Debris: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. If more than a car trunk load or 33 gallon container, cost is $75 per load, limit 1 load per day. Furniture: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase.

Leaf & Yard Waste: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. Yard waste must be bagged or in containers not greater than 55 gallons. You must use paper bags for yard waste – no loose material or material in plastic bags is accepted. Materials too large to fit in 55 gallon container must be cut to 3 feet or less in length and bundled with twine.

Mattresses & Box Springs: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station for free with annual sticker or pass purchase, call theTransfer Station prior to bringing mattresses to see if there is room in container. Drop off at the Prudence Island Transfer Station for a fee of $15, with annual sticker or pass purchase. Pay fee by cash to attendant. Prudence Island sticker or pass holders may drop off mattresses, free of charge, at the Main Transfer Station. At both Transfer Stations, damaged/wet/bed bug-infested mattresses or box springs will not be accepted for recycling and will incur a disposal charge of $50/unit. 

Motor Oil & Filters: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. No other fluids accepted. Not accepted on Prudence Island.

Propane Tanks: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase. Propane tanks must be empty.

Scrap Metal: Drop off at the Main & Prudence Island Transfer Stations, free of charge, with annual sticker or pass purchase.

Tires: Drop off at the Main Transfer Station, for a fee of $5 each, with annual sticker or pass purchase. Tires only- no rims.
